Sri Lanka: A surprising island of rainforests and large predators

Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s most captivating destinations for nature photography enthusiasts. In a relatively small space, primary rainforests, savannahs, lagoons, wetlands, and national parks coexist, home to an extraordinary concentration of endemic wildlife. Here, every day offers completely different scenery, ranging from dense tropical forests to open landscapes frequented by elephants, leopards, and hundreds of bird species.

This workshop draws on field experience gained on numerous exploratory trips, with the aim of taking you to places that offer the best photographic opportunities, far from the most touristy itineraries.

An itinerary built for photography, not for running

Each stop was planned to accommodate nature photography schedules. The trip’s duration was carefully designed to ease jet lag, limit travel burdens, and allow for the necessary time to work calmly on each location.

We’ll be able to wait for the best light, dedicate more time to interesting situations, and, when necessary, return to the same locations if the previous day’s conditions didn’t allow us to capture the desired shots. This approach offers much more freedom than traditional itinerant tours and allows you to experience nature at its own pace.

Kumana National Park: The choice of tranquility

Among Sri Lanka’s many national parks, we chose Kumana National Park, a still relatively unfrequented area that allows for more peaceful wildlife photography.

Here, the jeep traffic typical of more popular areas decreases, allowing us to experience leopard, elephant, and other animal encounters without the crowds that often compromise photographic opportunities. The vast lagoons and numerous waterholes also make Kumana one of the country’s best birdlife spots, with both resident and migratory species finding an ideal habitat here.

Sinharaja: In the heart of the rainforest

Alongside the safaris, we will have a completely different experience inside the Sinharaja Rainforest, one of Sri Lanka’s last great primary rainforests and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here, photography takes on a slower, more immersive pace: along trails shrouded in tropical vegetation, we’ll search for numerous endemic bird species, including the extremely rare Serendip Scops Owl, discovered only in the early 2000s. It will also be an opportunity to recount the daily lives of local communities, who travel these trails every day transporting crops, taking children to school, or herding livestock, providing authentic images that enrich the travel reportage.

To help you explore the forest in the best possible conditions, we will also provide each participant with protective gaiters, useful against the leeches present in the tropical environment.

Experience, authenticity and local hospitality

Throughout the trip, we will be accompanied by a certified nature guide, who speaks perfect Italian thanks to over twenty years of experience in our country. His experience in the area and in wildlife research will be a fundamental added value during each photographic outing.

Our choice of accommodations also contributes to making the trip more authentic. In Negombo, we’ll stay in a modern property with a swimming pool, ideal for recharging our batteries before departure and at the end of the trip. During the days dedicated to Kumana National Park, we’ll stay at the Jungle Queen Villa, a family-run property that has become a key location for our workshops over the years. Here, we’ll experience Sri Lankan hospitality firsthand, savor traditional cuisine, and reach the park in just a few minutes, maximizing our time dedicated to photography.

No mandatory vaccinations are required for this photography trip.
